I see many Great Egrets here in Marin County where I live. While
fishing, they will pose without moving for long minutes above the water;
fooling the fish into thinking they are not there. There is so much
grace to them—like a dancer in still position
"Often, my
paintings take the form of a portrait. Just the bird against a field of
color. This way, I can devote my attention to simple things, like the way
light hits feathers and turns them iridescent on a barnyard chicken. "
Sometimes, what
moves me is the turn of a head, a wing angled against a craggy beak. I
look at how a bright white tuft on a Brown Pelican's head becomes a
silhouette against a deep background. There is something prehistoric in
these solemn birds.

"There are times
when a background helps tell a story. The reflection of a Swan in a pool
of water on a late afternoon offers a feeling of tranquility.
I had observed this Swan on a lake in Connecticut. Having lost her mate
she spent her days alone, and, because of this, she let me get close. "
"Friends of mine
purchased a very old house.
A man had lived there many years after his wife had died, gradually
letting the house decay around him. I pictured the little House Finch
alighting on his window-a little bit of life in a dark, dusty place."
"The raptor
in this print is an American Kestrel, the smallest falcon. I liked the
idea of this delicate but feisty little bird perched against a big,
dramatic sky, its colors mirrored in the sunset. "
"I am
always amazed to find these elegant, snow-white birds foraging in the most
unlikely places, sometimes right by the side of the road in a muddy bog,
poised to strike for an evening meal."
Here the Gray Wolf stands against the
American flag. Both are symbols of our country. But our legacy with this
wolf is worn and tattered, so I have made the flag tattered, too.
The
Peregrine Falcon is known for its swiftness and power; the Bald
Eagle is our enduring symbol of strength. Though both species have
suffered from pesticide exposure, they are beginning to show some
signs of recovery.
