Northern
Reflections - Loon Family |
|
"The lighting is fundamental to the effect of this painting. I put
almost the entire painting in shadow, with the accents coming from the
highlights. The early morning light is striking across the
scene, picking up just a bit of the cliff face and the heads of the two
adult loons." |

Antarctic Evening - Humpback Whales |
|
"There have been many magic evenings in my life,
but the evening of the iceberg cruise stands out .... The hues of the sky
vied with the shadows of the icebergs for a sort of beauty contest of
natures... It was at once glorious and subtle and ever changing as we glided
among the gigantic towers of ice, and my mind kept turning to fantastic castles from some
childhood fairy tale..." |

Loon
Gathering at Big East |
|
"From my childhood, my joy was to explore the
lakes in the Canadian northland. The spirit of those lakes was, and still
is, the common loon...I found one fairly large, rambling lake that went on
and on through bays and narrows and coves. There was no road leading to it,
but a portage type trail down which I carried my canoe. It became a sort of
secret, wild place of escape for short camping trips." |

Hour of
the Egret |
After a long day, I generally take an evening
walk. It was on one such stroll a few years ago that I came across the old
Venice [FL] train station, abandoned and derelict. Its grandiose Romanesque
arches are now defaced with graffiti and a superhighway roars overhead, but
I like to imagine it in its heyday in the 1920's when trains were the only
sensible way to travel long distances.
Egrets regularly feed in a canal that runs nearby, and I recalled that these
birds were once as endangered as the passenger train is today. |

Lucas
Porch |
-
Lucas Farm was
established in the 19th Century on good land near the school where I was
teaching in the 1970s. By the time I discovered it, its fate was sealed.
Urban sprawl had made farming an untenable land use. The Lucas family
kindly allowed me to take my art students onto the property on sketching
trips. Although its old charm remained, the Victorian house was being
taken over by a tangle of nature. To me the cracks and peeling paint
added the dignity of age to the sprightly and lyrical architectural
details. These details speak to me of an exuberant and inventive period
in our history.

Londolosi - Cheetah |
With their keen eyesight cheetahs can rest and
search at the same time. They live a vulnerable existence. Catching and
killing prey is tricky and exhausting. But the most serious risk comes from
other predators, hyenas and lions. In a tragically high percentage of cases,
cheetahs will make a kill only to be robbed of it. They never even try to
defend it. Moreover, these predators will kill cheetah babies every time
they get the chance.
I like this reaching, peering pose. It reminds me of the action when, in
full chase, the cheetah has to make a sudden turn.

Whitetail in Winter |
"For most of human
history, winter was a hard time. Food was scarce and shelter was essential.
The same applies to deer, especially in the season of snow.. Deep snow makes
it almost impossible for deer to move about with their sharp, narrow hooves.
They, therefore, 'yard up' in sheltered valleys often filled with cedar.
They beat down trails in a very limited area, and so can move about with
great restriction..."

Egrets
of the Secret Grove |
"India is the only
place where nature seems to flourish in spite of dense populations, even in
cities. I was told of a sacred grove of trees in a village on Bali, a Hindu
island. We arrived just before dusk, when hundreds, if not thousands, of
birds were restlessly rearranging their roosting positions. Most of the
birds were egrets of three species. As they rose and whirled through the
air, they reminded me of spirits - of the essence of birds."
