" Winter Barnyard " |
|
The barn with its cattle symbolizes for
me a wonderful era in the relationship of man to man, and man to
animal. |

" Our dog, Smallwood, is the center of interest.
He was mostly Labrador retriever, but his grandmother was a Newfoundland, so
he was big - 110 lbs. We got him as a puppy, and he grew up with our
children. The memories of Smallwood are the memories of my young family. Of
course, he was always my companion on daily walks. His nose and ears drew my
attention to many aspects of nature I would have overlooked. His enthusiasm
and devotion were boundless. Obviously, he always wanted to be with us; we
were his pack. It therefore seemed as though if he were inside he wanted to
be out, if he were outside he wanted in. Someone defined a door as something
a dog is always on the wrong side of . . . in his opinion. " - Robert Bateman |

Snowy
Morning |

"Surprisingly, these bright creatures are able
to camouflage themselves masterfully in their habitat, but I have shown this
singular fellow in a serene wintry moment, where the eye can enjoy his cool
and elegant markings." |

Among
the Leaves |
|
"Early May is an enchanted time in the
hardwood forest. The snow has melted, and the sun is able to penetrate
the leafless canopy of twigs. The baby cottontail has left his nest.
he was born about one month ago, blind, pink and thumb-size. His
mother had made a nest of rootlets, grasses and down from her own chest.
In this painting, I show the little fellow in his "freeze" pose." |

Autumn
Overture - Moose |
" As the days shorten with the coming of winter,
the leaves have mostly fallen, but the grasses still glow gold and green.
This bull is making his way along the edge of a dam when his nostrils tell
him of the presence of a cow, a potential mate."

Snowy
Nap - Tiger |
|
"With
the fall of the Soviet Empire, the realm of the mighty Siberian tiger is
gravely threatened. The great old growth forests of eastern Siberian are
being decimated to make quick cash for the collapsed Russian economy. Of course, entire ecosystems, including large animals like tigers and
bears, are in jeopardy. This young fellow, of the largest tiger subspecies,
altaica, found in eastern Siberia and Manchuria, appears unaware of
the fate of his race. After romping around and rolling about, he has dropped
onto the soft, white powder for a quick, snowy nap." |

Grizzly

"It is sometimes enjoyable for an artist to
explore the variety of textures on an animal. Every square inch of the
natural world is unique and particular, including the head of this grizzly."

The
Prowler - Raccoon |
"Raccoons prowl. Like the human prowler, they
invade people's spaces. Of course, raccoons do not recognize private
property: Your world is their world. At our present home, we have two apple
trees and a luxuriant grapevine. We think that the fruits belong to us. The
raccoons have a different opinion."

Under
the Banyan - Tiger |
Tigers are not
always easy to spot in the wild, but when they make an appearance for an
artist, the results can be magical, as seen above. " A trip to India is
always a wonderful adventure. The abundance of nature in such a densely
populated place is always amazing. Tigers in the wild are the ultimate goal
of anyone interested in the natural world of India. They are also the
hardest to see. Some of our sightings have been from elephant back, some
were fleeting glimpses, but the best one of my life was by the old gate in
Ranthambore. There was a mother and two half-grown cubs relaxing not more
than four yards from our vehicle. This painting is one of those cubs in a
tranquil but proud pose."

Moonlight Moose |
Like an apparition
in the moonlight, Bateman's bull moose is one with the dimly lit landscape.
"On a moonlit night, the bull moose pauses at a swampy lake. Because it is
rutting season he is very on edge. He turns suddenly, perhaps he has heard
something. To me, the upturned spruce root echoes his antlers."
