Contemporary
painter Henry Asencio has emerged as one of the most intriguing young
artists working today. His work blends the classical ideals of
figurative painting with a unique style. The artist states, “Painting
for me is very cathartic and is the most articulate way for me to
express my passion.” Merging introspection and visual spectacle,
Asencio’s personal investigations of the figure, spirituality and
abstraction possess the power to transform today’s ideals of elegance
and sensuality. In 1996, Asencio was sponsored by an art supply company,
Thayer and Chandler, which resulted in exposure in exhibitions as far
afield as Germany and Paris. In 1998, Asencio’s work was recognized in
the Amsterdam Art Competition, earning the prestige of being a first
time artist dually awarded with gold and silver medals in two separate
divisions, he was acknowledged for self-portraiture in oils and a figure
in the acrylic medium.

“Comfort” depicts a
beautiful woman embracing herself in quiet serenity. For this image, the
artist chose to pose his muse in the fetal position. Often used
symbolically, this posture serves as a metaphor for healing, transformation,
awakening or rebirth. Her legs are soothingly pulled against her body; her
hair gently cascades as she drops her head to her knees and her arms reach
out to engulf her entire being. She is safe and finds comfort from within
herself that perhaps may even have its origins from another dimension.
Through composition and color Asencio is able to skillfully convey the
unspoken truths of body language. And in spite of his sensually simple
imagery, he weaves spiritual tales of inner beauty, hope and strength into
each work of his art.

Asencio’s “Recognition”
is a sensual yet powerful composition wrought with references to ascension
and its ensuing redemption. Sitting peacefully, her head is tilted back as
if commanding the heavens. With one hand at her heart and the other
outstretched and open as if to gesture “come with me”, she recognizes the
power of her spirit and its ability to transform. Asencio’s flawless figures
are often placed amidst a flurry of painted abstraction, thereby
illustrating her power to “ascend from the chaos”.

Asencio’s mastery of
the female form and ability to use color and abstraction to express emotion
are testament to his refined artistic talent. His work entitled “Azure” is a
perfect illustration of this communion of color and form.
Surrounded by the empty lightness of the blank canvas, a beautiful woman
emerges from the abstract wreckage. Loosely draped in a richly colored azure
cloth, she stands confident, yet modestly covered as if ready to bare her
soul.
