“My
paintings are usually simple and uncluttered to show off
the beauty of each individual flower. In our busy and
overwhelming world, I want my paintings to be a sort of
visual sanctuary — a moment of serenity and peace,
focused on the beauty of nature.”
-Jane Jones
The
richly hued flowers in the paintings of Jane Jones may appear fragile and
delicate, but they possess within them the power to command the eye and
captivate the viewer.
Jones isolates one or
two flowers, highlighting their color and unique attributes. A simple
vase, made timeless by its classic shape, or a sparkling crystal bowl
add to the contrasting play of light and shadow in her contemporary
works that transcend time. Luminous and graceful, poised in spacious
settings, her flowers radiate an inner light. Jones accomplishes this
effect with an Old Masters’ technique, layering oil glazes over her
opaque under painting to achieve a depth of light and luminosity.

" There are so many different
varieties and colors of pansies available. All bunched together in a group,
their fragrance is really sweet. Up close, each one is a wonderful little
character; some are quiet, others are jaunty.
Pansies are carefree and undemanding little characters, but when they are
on stage like this, they are STARS, and they like it! "

" I love tulips
and one of my favorite spring flowers to pair them with is the iris. The
radiating narrow petals of the iris are a good counterpoint to the broad
petals and simple cup shape of the tulip. I think that the yellow orange
color of the tulip is magnificent when placed near blues and violets; it
really comes to life. The crooked stem of the tulip makes me think that it
is a bit wayward (and perhaps a bit creative) compared to the very
straight iris stem.
The simple shapes of the river
stones echo the tulip shape and help it to create a graceful diagonal
movement. The stones also are reminders of water which is so necessary
for the blossoms of spring to bloom. "

" When I first saw this red vase, I started
thinking about what type of flower would look good in it. I chose the
antherium flowers because their shape and color can hold their own with the
powerful shape and color of the vase.
I wanted everything else in the painting to
contrast with and therefore magnify the bright red round shapes of the
flowers and vase, so the other areas of the painting are grayed and square.
The flowers have a wonderful waffle-like texture that is pronounced because
all of the other textures are smooth.
The voluptuous shape of the vase is a great foil
for flowers that my grandmother used to call "little boy flowers".
All of this comes together to make these flowers the center of
attraction."
