“There is an
intense urgency to paint, as if something important needs to be said, and I can
only say it with brush and canvas.”
-Murray Phillips
Murray Phillips looks like an artist. With a
long beard and hair, and comfortable attire, he is quiet and thoughtful by
nature. Although he has been painting for 35 years, most of Murray’s life has
been lived in the halls of academia where he holds graduate degrees in Theology
and Cultural Anthropology. For over 20 years, he has taught in a variety of
colleges and universities. His interests are many, including classical guitar
and sailing; but an abiding love has been his desire to paint. more
There are three Vine Maples
paintings. Vine Maples and Cedars is the third in the series. It was
done in Manning Park in Southern BC. It was painted two years ago for the
Calgary Stampede Art Exhibition and was again on Engineer’s Road which is
now just a path that leads steeply up from the highway to the north of the
main road through the park. It is a place that is frequented by bears and I
have had many encounters with black bears in this region. It was sketched
on site and painted a few days later.

There are three Vine Maples paintings. The
first is the Red Vine Maples. It was done in Manning Park in Southern BC.
Vine Maples are a true vine, that grow to about 14 feet. The wood is
extremely hard and burns at a very high temperature. It is not recommended
that the wood be used in a conventional fireplace as it burns excessively
hot. The leaves are the first to turn in the Fall – usually starting as
early as mid August. If the leaves are exposed to the sun they will turn
red, if little exposure to the sun they turn yellow.
