by Edward Aldrich
'Painting fox is a passion
on mine. Especially fox in snow. The vibrant oranges and rust colors
against the blues and white of snow creates wonderful contrast. This is
a painting about the play of light on both fox and snow.'

Urban Wilderness II - Whitemud Creek
by Elsie Baer
Whitemud Creek is a
lovely part of Edmonton where I like to go to get away from the bustle
of city living. Walking there gives me the feeling of being in the
wilderness. It's quiet, the scenery is lovely, especially in autumn when
all the trees and shrubs are displaying their colors.

"Spectacled Owl Portrait"
by Carel Pieter Brest Van Kempen
Common and widespread
throughout the American tropics, the Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix
perspicillata) is found in a number of different forest types, but is
rarely seen far from heavy cover. It also seems fond of water bodies,
and typically lives near rivers, where crabs constitute an important
element of its diet. The adults are buffy below, with rich, chocolate
upperparts and breastband, and a conspicuous white face pattern. Young
birds, like the one visible in the background, are whitish with dark
faces. The female Spectacled Owl lays one or two eggs in a tree cavity
towards the end of the dry season. Usually, just one bird survives, but
suspicions of siblicide have never been confirmed by observation. Like
most owls, the young leaves the nest long before it can fly well, and it
remains dependent on its parents for several months.
"Northern Casque-Headed Treefrog"
by Carel Pieter Brest Van Kempen
In the tropical
rainforests of Panama and northern South America, five species of
bizarre little frogs haunt the understory. Up two inches in length,
their lack of size is more than made up for by a fierce countenance and
attitude. Their big, armored heads are triangular, and bear several
large thorns. A pair of “tusks,” which are actually bone spurs, stud the
lower jaw. These are used for defense and to subdue prey, which tends to
be large in relation to the frog. Long considered members of the typical
treefrog family, Hylidae, today the casque-headed frogs (Hemiphractus
spp.) are believed to have diverged from other frog taxa some time back,
and are generally given their own family. Living on or near the forest
floor, they usually mate on dry land. After fertilizing the eggs, the
male places them on the female's back, where they adhere to a
specialized patch of skin. Undergoing metamorphosis while still in the
eggs, the young emerge as tiny, fully-formed frogs. The northernmost
member of this genus, H. fasciatus, is found in Colombia, Panama, and
probably Costa Rica as well. Like many frog species, the Northern Casque-headed
Frog has undergone a stark decline in numbers over the past two decades.
