Survival for the last

in having initially being linked with a commercial gallery in Ottawa
that indulged my interest in a wide range of subjects , styles and

On a somewhat less
personal note, I am proud to have assisted in organizing and nurturing
the growth of the CAAA and witnessing the good work it has done in
promoting attendance at numerous museums and institutions. |

"Late Spring Visit"
by Don Connolly
A DeHavilland DHC-6
Twin Otter departs a (generic) village in the Arctic Archipelago.
These rugged and
versatile aircraft went out of production some 20 years ago but have won
such popularity with users that they are soon to be returned into
production by another Canadian firm,which
already has a large number of orders in hand. One feature that has done
much to generate this confidence in the aircraft are its powerful and
dependable turbine engines, manufactured by another Canadian company,
Pratt & Whitney Canada. Like the setting, the artist has chosen a
“generic” colour scheme for this particular aircraft.

"Winter Trials"
by Don Connolly
With the centennial
of powered flight in Canada fast approaching (2009), this painting
portrays the aircraft involved: the Silver Dart. The venue of the first
flight was Baddeck NS and the date was 23 February 1909; but this
painting shows one of several subsequent trial flights made in the
period immediately thereafter. As in the first flight, the aircraft flew
off the frozen surface of Bras D’Or Lake /Baddeck Bay and for distances
of several kilometers or less. It was 50' in wingspan, weighed
approximately 800 lbs., and was powered by an 8-cylinder Curtiss engine
of 50 horsepower. The flying surfaces were covered with a light grey
coloured silk, hence its name.
The aircraft’s
principal designer and pilot was JP McCurdy , ( much) later to become
Lieut. Governor of Nova Scotia; but also involved in the project were
four other notables: Casey Baldwin - like, its designer, a young
Canadian U of T graduate engineer, Glenn Curtiss , Tom Selfridge, a US
Army officer and Alexander Graham Bell, who was the principal organizer
of the group and whose wife provided its financial backing.
As in each trial
flight townsfolk, often on ice skates provided a keen audience. Baddeck
was, not co-incidentally, the venue of the Bell’s vacation home and one
of his workshops.
