The Art of Henri de Groot

Henri de Groot produces highly refined Portraits of the West out of his home studio west of Edmonton, Alberta. He works in graphite and oil to produce beautifully detailed images of people and horses that often convey his sense of humor and reveal a glimpse of a real life cowboy or rancher.

De Groot produces his yearly output evenly between colour (oil) and black and white (pencil). Oil ... Read More

Dean McLeod

The Art of Dean McLeod

Walk into Dean McLeod’s studio and your reaction to his artwork is likely to be a verbal and visceral “wow”. You are struck at once by the paintings visually deceptive spaces and the rich color of the saturated canvasses. Objects are depicted in a style that could be termed as “contemporary representational”. Handmade frames adorn each painting. Built from a wide v ... Read More

A Lamp unto my Feet

Inspired from the scripture in |Psalms the lamp lights the way ahead and represents truth. The dark forest in this painting has only one source of light. I wanted to let the warm glow of the lamp bounce off the young woman and even reflected off the trees in the background hoping the viewer will almost sense the heat from its flame.

The Vessel

The Vessel is symbolic of our lives. We are spirit soul and body and like a container we pour out our lives before others. This painting portrays a woman full of love and ready to spill over. I wanted to capture the warmth of the sun on a summer day and a soft breeze from the lake.

Through the Window

Back in an era of a simpler time, this young lady waits by a window in anticipation of her young man to come by. The focus of this piece is on the light that envelops her form and the brush stokes that dance creating movement. I wanted the light to flood this piece and the mood to be a bright day of hope.

Mother Hen

“We often call nurturing mothers a ‘mother hen’. It is the image we associate in our minds of the careful eye a hen has over her chicks. This painting depicts the combination of a mother with a hen, a loving representation of mother’s love. Painted on wood panel conveys the impression of a farmstead.”

Waiting

I am drawn to the Victorian era, a time long past where romance was carefully pursued. Emotions were held in check even though their hearts were bursting with emotions. In this painting, my subject waits for the train that will take her to her sweetheart. Anticipation is high yet she maintains a quiet dignity. The oils were applied to natural linen where the weave shows through giving the painting a true ‘feel’ of paintings of the past.

Robert Bissell

The Art of Robert Bissell

Imaginary Realist Robert Bissell creates a completely different atmosphere from our daily experience, inviting us to learn more about ourselves. In his paintings the world of animals is a mirror for human existence, self-definition and reflection.  These are not mere children’s tales – quite the contrary.  Bissell’s work causes us to reflect on the environment, life, death, ... The Golden Hour

Towards the end of a beautiful day, when our world becomes bathed in a golden light, we can pause at the threshold where increasing darkness will fold the day’s experience into night. All becomes silent as the twilight presence of our world displays its detail and radiance. It is at this moment our souls are drawn towards the setting sun to merge and finally accept the inheritance of darkness. Here we can once again be one with the cradle of origin whose mysteries will arise at dawn. – Robert Bissell

Majesty

If you look up the word ‘vitality’ in the dictionary you will find the following descriptive words: liveliness, life, energy, spirit, vivacity, exuberance, buoyancy, bounce, elan, zest, sparkle, dynamism, passion, fire, vigor, drive. These are the descriptors of our natural world found everywhere in nature, that I aspired to in creating this painting.

Guides

Guardians of, and guides through the natural world, they challenge us to consider our place and roles in a higher order. Reminds me of the quote by Claude Levi-Strauss, from his book Totemism that says, “Animals are good for thinking.”

The Oracle

The journey we take in our lives is always touched by another who can help show us the way or offer advice. Although we gain our knowledge from a number of sources, there are usually one or two that are particularly meaningful in our quest for guidance. The most profound of these “old souls” are those that have traveled far themselves and are wise beyond their years. It seems to me that bears significantly present to us as old souls, whereas rabbits are generally seen as young learners, still maturing on their journey.

The Vision

The inspiration for this painting came after I viewed some paintings by Hiro Yokose in New York. His work seems ephemeral and mysterious to me, with suggestions of swirling clouds and misty visions, usually with a central defining light source that we try to look past for some meaning. My protagonist here looks even more skyward and in contrast to the fleeting atmosphere is firmly grounded to the earth.

The Diver

This painting was the result of a study of mine into the ways in which the physical properties of various types of matter can be transformed. In this case the melting or “fusion” from a state of solid to one of liquid. The bear here is presumed to become one and “melt” with the water he is entering. I hope viewers will find this a fun metaphor for the “leap of faith” we must take, in order to transform ourselves and be one with the world around us.

The Wellspring

In my reading about rain forests and in my limited experience with jungles, it can seem as if all life begins in these primal settings. It is possible to believe that the health and life of our entire planet depends on these environments. Rampant growth and lush vegetation that can overwhelm compel us to seek meaning and the origin of life. The forest of Ndoki in the Central African Republic has more wildlife per square mile than anywhere else on the planet and remains largely unchanged by human beings.

It also contains herds of bush elephants. It was a photo of a small elephant in Ndoki that allowed the idea of this painting to develop. A “wellspring” is similarly defined as a source of ideas and a source of life. Perhaps they really are the same thing?

The Chase

No, penguins do not live with polar bears! But who knows, maybe they chased them out of Antarctica and banished them to the North Pole? This painting was another idea suggested by a colleague and although this might not have been his original vision, I find the whole idea great fun. I found separate photos and videos of bears and penguins swimming and it can be a very dynamic scene with everyone dodging and darting around but essentially going in the same direction. At the zoo, I could observe both species swimming in separate pools not 500 feet from each other. In the wild they live as much as 10,000 miles apart. – Robert Bissell

Drifters

“A friend had sent me a photo of a bear lying on a log in a forest like the one you see here. That same day I was driving along the Russian River in northern California, where folks like to drift down the river on rafts or rubber tubes. So I put those images together and decided to paint the scene as Monet might have done. I hope all those elements have come together to present a scene of wonder and relaxation.”

Sage of the Night

This painting uses a deeper blue portion of the color gradient and palette, harmoniously uniting the sky and the ocean below. It contrasts the main figure – a wise, strong, benevolent bear – with surrounding delicate butterflies that are emerging from faint stars in the sky. The figure is deliberately positioned so that the viewer makes direct eye contact with the bear. The light butterflies fluttering around the bear figure suggest a freeing that comes from within when we have a greater awareness of ourselves in face other beings and the world around us.

The Whole World

“In this painting I wanted to create something complex and immersive that would reflect my own experience of crawling through the grass and underbrush one day earlier in the summer. As I turned over on my back and looked up ,I felt as if I was experiencing (and was in the middle of) everything there was in the landscape. From that vantage point there was a rhythm to the natural world. Every being was dodging and darting here and there in some kind of perfect harmony with the grasses and flowers. In that time, my whole world.” – Robert Bissell

This new Robert Bissell release is teaming with life. A buzzing microcosmic world and the king of the forest to contemplate the driving force behind it. This is what we have grown to love about Bissell’s work. His imagination will awaken your inner child and evoke the playful spirit that many of us wish to revisit.

The Bamboo Forest

I have wanted to do a painting of a panda bear for many years but found it difficult to depict something that is such a universal image for many people. Panda bears seem to be part of a dream for me. For most of us they only exist in images or as effigies. They are also seen as the symbol for environmental protection. This bear is enjoying a conversation in the quiet of the forest away from human concerns. Long live the panda bear! – Robert Bissell

“What could be more uplifting than to get a bunch of creatures together on a grassy mountain-top in the middle of summer just to chat and roll around with in fun and companionship? These were my thoughts as I began to put this painting together. The original was 24″ x 120” so you can imagine the task! By the time it was finished all the bears had names and even the mouse too! Each day was like “I think I’ll work on Harry today and let Clive dry for a while”.. As an artist I tend to take on and project the emotions that are displayed in a painting, so I had to be really happy when working on this. I am showing some insets here in addition to the complete piece because it is easier to see the detail.” – Robert Bissell

The Voyagers

This painting features an elephant family, with the adult elephant walking side by side and the baby elephant happily trailing slightly behind in their footsteps. Purple butterflies grace the family’s walk along a calm ocean, with the ocean’s waters gently reaching and then receding from a sandy strip of beach as the elephants move ahead together. The palette focuses on softer shades of blue present in the expansive sky. The painting’s scale reflects the elephant family’s journey towards the bright eastern sun with full anticipation of what awaits them.
