The Original Art of Gregg Johnson
Autumn Splendor

Alberta is blessed with year round beauty and color both on the prairies and in the mountains, but the foothills often have the most stunning color, and I make a point every year of heading for those areas to photograph this rich display of autumn color—birches, white poplar, trembling aspens— and marvel at the intense yellows and oranges and the many shades in between, even bordering on reds and pinks. And I’ve painted them on location and from my photo references, and I’ve never tired of trying to capture the beauty of their simple, elegant, white and ochre trunks gilded with shadows and reflected lights and finally smothered by clouds of leaves of dancing leaves.

Nature said it all when she dressed the stately aspen for her fall fashion show.

Remnants of Autumn

There is a unique moment in the third season of the year when autumn’s fashion show is over and winter hasn’t arrived and when there are only a few leaves — stragglers — clinging to the white bark of the aspens as if to postpone winter for a few more weeks. It’s a subtle time color-wise as the greys and gathering forest shadows are briefly touched with color, but it is also a melancholy time as we all know what’s just around the corner. Artistically, it has its own charm.

January in Jasper

“Occasionally as an artist I have an absolute serendipity, and such was my luck recently to be driving down the Medicine Lake road in Jasper, when I and some friends came across a huge dump of fresh snow. It was very spotty, and stretched for only a couple of kilometers along the road, but what was there was stunning. And it was near the end of the day and the pinks and violets illuminated the area for only a few short but gorgeous minutes. Needless to say, we had ourselves a rich photographic opportunity. This painting was of a road-side clump of spruce trees.”

A Golden Beacon – Bathed in Morning Sunlight and Fronted by a Ripe Canola Field

“St . Nicholas UKranian Catholic  Church of St. Michael, Lamont County, constructed in 1923.

One of my passions as an artist is  exploring the back roads of the prairies and discovering beauty down every one of them.  And to come upon one of  these onion dome churches—- the only remaining beacons to the past—-is a pleasure often unrivaled.  And there are never two the same.  They vary in size and shape and number of domes, but they nearly all lie in and east/west configuration.  And most of them are  even more beautiful inside than out. Eastern Alberta is crisscrossed with these beautiful icons and never disappoints.”

A Beacon Gone

“A former abandoned onion dome church in Lamont County,   this beauty  sat on the corner of RR 171 and TW 560 for many years,  But like so many of the prairie beacons of the past, this little church no longer sits on its elevated plot.  First the train stations were torn down, and then the grain elevators and the water towers,  and sadly some old churches fell victim to the same fate—-disuse, costly repairs and vandalism.  However the good news is that many of these historic churches are still maintained and still functioning as a vital part of the religious and cultural framework of their communities.”

Golds and Reds Saturate – Astotin Lake, Elk Island Park

“The reflection patterns and the alternating horizontal streaks of calm and gently ruffled water create a mosaic of light and dark and of smooth and rough, and each horizontal shape takes the eye back in mesmerizing stages until the colors disappear on the far shore of the lake. It’s an endlessly fascinating phenomenon that is hard to take for granted by even the most calloused philistine”.

Aspen Riches

“Every fall a couple of friends and I go looking for the most brilliant and colorful aspens in Alberta. We drive all over the province looking for this queen of autumn color—aspens, white poplar, trembling aspens—to photograph and marvel at their rich yellows and oranges and the many shades in between, even bordering on reds, especially in the Kootenay Plains. And I’ve painted them on location and from my photo references, and I’ve never tired of trying to capture the beauty of their simple, elegant, white and ochre trunks extending gracefully skyward, gilded with reflected lights and finally smothered by clouds of leaves of both subtle and lavish tones of yellows. Nature said it all when she dressed the stately aspen for her fall fashion show.”

Edmonton Evening

“The lights of the city from McNally High School grounds are endlessly fascinating.  The city is a most fascinating organism with its buildings and streets and lights and shadows and ravines and river and peoples; and it’s never the same.   It’s constantly changing as the sun moves across the sky and the light of the day goes from blazing hot to subtle cool and then darkness, when a whole other set of visual delights take over”.

The Court House – Edmonton by Morning

“On a sunny morning the skyline of Edmonton lights up in golds and yellows as seen here observed from the east near McNally High School.  I’ve just begun to return to a subject which fascinated me while I was teaching art at McNally High School, whose fields and grounds perched on the bank of the North Saskatchewan River with an unobstructed view across the river to the spectacular skyline of Edmonton.  With this renewed interest in the city, I intend to explore with my camera and watercolours the hundreds of stunning perspectives in this my city in the coming months.  So keep your eyes open for a totally new look at this beautiful northern city”

The Berendon Glacier

“The Berendon Glacier just a few miles outside of Stewart, BC, has not yet experienced too much recession because of the enormous amounts of snow falling along the coast every winter. To get there one must drive into Alaska via the sleepy town of Hyder and then back into British Columbia on a perilous gravel road which yields stunning views of this and the neighbouring world famous Salmon Glacier from high above each of them. A remarkable and worthy destination for anyone craving adventure”

Moose Pond

“On a grey day the pond in early winter with ice forming on its surface in random patterns is a place of true solitude. The water and forest are dark and the reflections are a myriad shades of grey and black and white. And the mood is one of stillness and slumber, and the absence of moose tells us that they have retreated deep into the woods”.
