Artwork Description
In early spring, even before the ice has completely disappeared, I sometimes come across
a lone green frog. It is found in small ponds or ditches, and it was just such a location that I came
across the one shown in the painting. They can be rather sluggish before the season advances
and temperatures rise, affording plenty of time to observe closely and even do a fairly comprehensive
sketch. While it can be confused with an immature bullfrog, the ridges along it’s back eliminates
this misidentification. It might be confused for a mink frog, who also has back ridges, especially
if the individual has vague markings, but those with well developed patterns are clearly one or
the other.
