The Salmon fleet for the west coast of Vancouver Island is reserved for trollers. These classic boats as depicted here are owned and operated by individual independent fishermen (and occasionally fisherwomen). Sadly with the reduced catches in recent years many of these beautiful boats are not being maintained. Their wooden hulls take a lot of time and expense to keep in shape and as a result are slowly disappearing. Their presence in the coastal harbours and inlets has always been an irresistible painting subject for me.
