Roy Hinz carving bear from stone

Born in British Columbia and raised on the northern Alberta prairies, Roy Hinz developed a deep
and enduring connection to the natural world. An avid outdoorsman, he finds continual
inspiration in the landscapes, wildlife, and quiet strength of nature—elements that have become
the foundation of his artistic vision.
Primarily self-taught, Hinz has spent decades honing his craft as a stone sculptor, guided by
curiosity, patience, and a profound respect for the materials he works with. From his studio near
Spruce Grove, Alberta, he hand-carves soapstone, pyrophyllite, alabaster, and chlorite into
striking sculptures that capture the beauty, movement, and spirit of the natural world. His work is
recognized for its intricate detail, graceful form, and powerful sense of life and connection.
Hinz’s sculptures are featured in prestigious galleries throughout Western Canada and are held in
private collections around the world, reflecting the growing appreciation for his distinctive
artistic voice and craftsmanship.
A defining milestone in his career came when his artwork was selected for the 2025 G7 Summit
held in Kananaskis, Alberta as the official gift for G7 Summit Leaders and G7 Outreach Country
Leaders. This esteemed recognition celebrated his ability to convey the creativity, resilience, and
cultural spirit of Canada through his exceptional sculptural artistry.
