Artwork Description
This custom handcrafted jewelry box is designed using Curly Eastern (hard) Maple. Curly Maple is not a distinct species but rather a maple tree that exhibits a unique, wavy grain pattern that is highly prized by woodworkers. Less than 5% of maple trees contain this type of wood. This grain pattern is caused by the irregular growth of fibre cells in the heartwood of the tree. The resulting grain pattern is a three dimensional appearance. This three dimensional pattern is seen as ripples that run perpendicular to the grain, creating a chatoyant, shimmering depth that changes under shifting light.
The dark wood between the body and lid is Wenge which is also used for the handle and decorative splines. Wenge is a very dense hardwood from central Africa. Its natural black and brown grain pattern is one of my favourite woods for accents and contrast.
The base is made from Black Walnut sourced from the Pacific Northwest. I have given it a soft profile to run the fingers along.
There are 2 removable trays giving 3 layers of space for your treasure’s to be stored in. The dividers are removable if desired. The trays are made of quarter sawn maple. Each component that I have chosen is designed to create an appreciation for the different woods and the grain that the tree can produce.
I have chosen hidden barrel hinges for this heirloom. It will last for the next generation to enjoy. The finish I have used is Osmo. It should remain in the same condition for 15 years or more. If it ever becomes dull or damaged, no sanding is required, simply apply a light coat of Osmo and rub it in.
