Artwork Description

This custom handcrafted jewelry box is designed using Black Walnut originally from the Pacific Northwest. The rich feel of the wood causes me to want to rub my fingers along its surface giving me the satisfying feeling of both strength and beauty. As one traces  the grain pattern around the 4 sides notice that you can see the continuity of grain. Each of the mitered corners are sharp and crisp. The decorative splines vary in size making it incredibly interesting knowing how much time was required to create this style of finish.

The top is made of Olive Wood originating from the Mediterranean or Northern Africa. Its striking grain and natural lustre makes it highly valued in projects such as this. Great care was taken to ensure that the prominent grain pattern was placed and centred to appeal to the balanced look of the wood. The profile of the top was chosen to allow the fingers to pass smoothly over the entire surface.

The wood between the body and lid is Eastern Hard Maple. The splines and dividers are of the same material. This wood allows me to create a very smooth and clean surface that can be polished and leaves a feeling of satisfaction and warmth.

The handles and trays are made of Olive Wood. The grain of the wood is very pleasing to the touch and eyes. There are 2 removable trays allowing for 3 layers to place your treasured objects.

The finish on this heirloom jewelry box is a product called Osmo, made in Germany. It is designed to remain beautiful for 15 years or more. If it becomes damaged or dull another few drops of Osmo will return its lustre just by rubbing it in. No sanding or stripping required. Easy to care for and a valuable piece to pass on to the next generation!
