Artwork Description

A Cria is the name for a baby camelid such as a llama or alpaca. It comes from the Spanish word cría, meaning “baby”.
At one time I lived up the road from a farmer who raised alpaca. He encouraged me to help myself to visits with these comical yet elegant creatures. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the barnyard with them observing their interactions while I sketched. The ‘ladies’ would stand around like super models, some with bangs, some with perms, some with shags others with what seemed to be false eyelashes and mascara! However what I enjoyed most was mom’s tenderness as she provided sustenance to her nursing youngster.
