Wolves have always been one of my favourite animals and subject matter by virtue of their elegance, and regal look. Moreover, they have a special place in my heart, being a native species to Canada. This piece is based off a photo taken by Niko Pekonen. I was drawn to this photo of his for several reasons; I love doing close up portraits of animals because it allows me to go into great detail to capture their beauty and depict the essence of soulfulness in their eyes. I felt that the twigs in the bottom left corner combined with the blurry shapes in the background serve an important purpose by creating a feeling of depth and interest, without taking away from the wolf, adding an overall balance to the piece.
