The actual process of painting a miniature requires a steady hand, concentration, a magnifying lens, excellent lighting and lots of patience. The goal is realism in these scaled-down originals. There is no average miniature, although some can be as small as 1 x 1 inches, this show features original artwork up to 11 by 14 inches or smaller . If a miniature is compared to a larger painting it is generally no larger than one-sixth of the larger size and can be be more challenging to paint as smaller brushes and surface are required.
Although, these artworks are small there is no limit to the subject matter: landscapes, portraits, still life, animals, botanicals, microscopic organisms and fantasy worlds. It is a captivating way for an artist to express their creativity and imagination on a small scale.
You will need to look closely at the tiny lettering, individual hairs and feathers, and detailed reflections. Being up close and personal is the ideal way to see the detailed and smaller versions of subjects.
