Every year the Pantone Color Institute reveals their Colour of the Year. Pantone changed things up this year by revealing two colours for 2021: Ultimate Gray and a vibrant yellow called Illuminating.
Pantone is best known for its Pantone colour system, which is used all over the world in fashion, décor, graphic design, printing, and more. Pantone’s colour system allows designers and manufacturers to match colours with one another.
The Colour of the Year is selected after thoughtful consideration and research. The Pantone Institute will look for new influences from around the world, including from art, fashion, travel destinations, technology, and more, before arriving at their selection.
For 2021, the Colours of the Year represent distinct elements coming together to support one another. Ultimate Gray is the colour of pebbles on a beach, and a symbol of strength and steadiness. The bright shade of yellow, Illuminating, represents positivity, energy, hope, and happiness. In the words of Leatrice Eiseman, director of the Pantone Color Institute, “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with a vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”
