The Art of Bonnie Marris

Bonnie Marris has been studying and painting wolves, foxes, dogs and horses since childhood. She remembers her family home as a refuge for anyone in trouble, human or animal. “At one time we had two wolves and a three- month- old coyote living with us,” she recalls with a smile. Always, when Marris wasn’t around animals, she was painting them, and this love led her to pursue degrees in zo ... Read More

Heart and Soul

Celebrate spring with this portrait of new life! The mare exudes quiet strength in the composition, with her foal standing slightly behind, cautious and curious.
Bonnie Marris wants viewers see each animal she paints as an individual, to connect with its soul. “We all know that our dogs and cats have personalities and their own ways of being,” she says. “Well, this is also true of grizzlies, of horses, of wolves—all nature’s creatures.”

The study of color and light is also important to her. “Color sets a mood, an atmosphere that can create feelings ranging from contentment to terror. There are colors within colors, too. The many colors in a shadow, for instance, convey cold or heat. The way light plays with the subject is also very important. I’m fascinated by hue changes in light as it ages with the day.”

Family Ties

“Family Ties is my celebration of the wonderful, complex social structure of a wolf pack. Each wolf has his or her place in the pack and all know and respect their leaders. Several times a day the group will demonstrate their place and ‘honor’ the alphas. How sad we as people can’t learn and live by such a beautiful, simple pact.” – Bonnie Marris

Trouble

Winner of the 2016 Masters of the American West Patrons’ Choice Award

In a family where Dad can strike instant regret with just his glare, this child knows it’s in big trouble. Mom is very satisfied to take a break and watch the fireworks.

A Bonnie Marris canvas is a private moment with the untamed, an intimate glimpse of the elusive side of the wilderness. And to many, the wolf personifies a wilderness complete. Without it there, there is no balance. For Bonnie, getting into a natural environment and seeing the animals on their own terms is as important as knowing the animals themselves.

In Marris’ Fine Art Edition Giclée Canvas “Trouble” it is easy to see that passion for her subject is only eclipsed by her mastery of the elements of color, composition, light and emotion. Artist, subject and art each aligned in magnificent perfection.

The Courtship

Bonnie Marris has published more fine art editions featuring the red fox than any of our other wildlife artist. The red fox was the subject of one of Bonnie’s early limited editions and coincidentally that winter scene of two fox was titled Courtship. This month, we celebrate 30 years of publishing Bonnie’s work with a new vulpes vulpes (red fox) courtship painting.

Widely distributed across Eurasia, North Africa, South China and North America, red foxes hunt birds, insects and small animals, mainly weasels and mice. Red fox pairs mate for life, although they usually only live together during the winter months. The male red fox is referred to as a dog, while the female is known as a vixen and their offspring are “kits”.

For the Love of Snow

A fresh blanket of snow turns the world into one big romper-room for animals who like to play. It’s fun to frolic, roll and bounce in the cool white flakes, especially if you are born with your snow suit on and there are no gaps around the ankle, neck and sleeves!

Into the Great Wide Open

“Sometimes, you just have to unleash yourself and all your power if you want to feel the sheer thrill of pure freedom,” says Bonnie Marris of “Into the Great Wide Open.”

It is hard to tell if she is referring to the horses in her painting or giving a little advice on life. Either way, she’s right. It is this passion that is the magic behind her art.

Horses run for the joy of it and the love of their own speed with each horse racing to win. When Marris paints, it’s for the joy of expressing the condition of being free. Whether that is of rushing horses, a pack of wolves at play or a fox hunting a woodland stream, it is that love of freedom that comes through in her art.

Aligned in perfection with her unbroken spirit is her mastery of the elements of color, composition and light. The results are the pure wildlife pleasure you find in the Fine Art Limited Editions of “Into the Great Wide Open” – grace, beauty and the expression of joy.

First Impressions

The warmth and purity of the mother-child bond is perhaps the most perfect in nature. A newborn foal is programmed for soaking up a huge amount of information and in those first gentle moments of life, recognition between mother and newborn sets in. The mare’s nuzzling and licking stimulates the foal to stand and take nourishment. In less than an hour, the foal has risen, albeit gangly and unsteady, on legs that seem two sizes too big.

With “First Impressions” Bonnie Marris has captured both the tenderness and power of the maternal bond. From the mare’s protective stance to her use of color and shadow, this Fine Art Limited Edition Canvas conveys a cocoon-like atmosphere of warmth and safety. The infectious passion that Bonnie has for the wilderness, animals and light and color has all come together in this exquisite work of equine art.

The Food Critic

Acting like a houseguest who has perhaps stayed on too long, it would seem that this raven has now taken the dinner menu under review. Recognized as perhaps the most intelligent of birds, it would make sense that an evolutionary step in its symbiotic relationship with the wolf would be to formally request the make-up of its next meal or perhaps the inadequacies of the last. Already charged with the care of the pack’s pups, one can only what this canine’s reaction will be when the raven’s haranguing is complete.

Morning on Honey Creek

It’s no mystery to Bonnie Marris as to why a red fox is always smiling. “They live in a world of enchantment,” she says. A radiant animal with a mind to match, he is keenly aware of every sight, sound and smell native or foreign to his magical forest realm. His reputations as a sly hunter or a cunning trickster are simply additional layers of his complex personality.

The morning sun dancing off the creek and bathing the fox in a warm glow are distinctively a style and palette all her own, making a Marris painting identifiable from across the room. Art of the West, in recognizing her singular blend of realistic and impressionistic technique observed, “. . . she wants the best of both worlds and seems to be finding it.”

“Morning on Honey Creek” is a distinctive work from one of the most important artists painting today. This Fine Art Edition Canvas was created with the same passion and attention to craft that Marris puts into giving life to this jewel in the forest.

Frosty Winter

“We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be . . . .” Farley Mowat – “Never Cry Wolf”

Undivided Attention

With a legendary reputation for intelligence and cunning, the extraordinary family structure of the red fox is often overlooked. “What would it be like to quietly sneak up on the site of a fox’s den and see the pack unbothered, just being foxes?” says Bonnie Marris. “I wanted people to see this side, the side that keeps a troop of foxes strong and tight.”

Casual time is not much different from that of wolves on a summer afternoon or with our own families for that matter. A den dug in the roots of trees can last for decades. The matriarchal vixen presides over and monitors the play of this year’s of brood of kits. On this peaceful afternoon the only things disturbing this family is the buzzing of mosquitoes around their ears.

There is a magic affinity between Bonnie and the wild animals she paints. Collectors’ gravitate to her work because it stirs these emotions in them as well. Marris’ “Undivided Attention” is available in two Fine Art Edition sizes, each capturing the passion and joy of her original painting.

Sweet Tooth

As the saying goes, “When you go in search of honey, be prepared to get stung by bees.” Bears endure stings to get not only the honey, but the prized and protein-rich pupae, larvae and eggs stored in the hive’s brood comb. After this bruin has completed his raid, he will hurry away to shake, as he would water, the angry bees from his face and fur.

Rocky Outlook

Wolves work tremendously hard to patrol, defend and hunt even a small territory. Wolves are commonly on the move for eight hours a day and may travel 4,000 miles a year. Because they may eat only once every 5 to 10 days, they also take the concept of rest very seriously. A rocky out-cropping such as this provides this pair with the opportunity to both conserve energy and survey a portion of their territory at the same time.

As noted by “SouthWest Art” magazine, “To say that Marris knows animals is an understatement. She lives them, breathes them, and—more than anything else —she loves them.” That love resonates throughout her art. It is that quality that keeps collectors coming back, again and again.

“Rocky Lookout” may capture a moment of rest in the wild, but is a complex mix of color and shadow, detail and impressionism that is her signature painting style. Bonnie Marris’ stock in the art marketplace continues to rise. If you are looking for something a little wild, this Fine Art Giclèe Canvas in an edition of only 50, is the perfect piece for you.

This dog symbolizes all the loyalty, friendship, trust and bonding that you have with a true friend. It isn’t that he is such a gorgeous specimen, it’s just that he seems to embody and communicate all those noble sentiments. The face on this dog is classic and lighting puts him in the perfect light. But it’s the end of the season and the children have returned to school and there is no one to play with right now. It is a reminder that all seasons have to end.

Catch the Wind

“I really wanted to show speed as a glowing, powerful feeling, through bold color and bright light and I wanted to show a different side of wolves – a playful and fun side. They are racing each other, hence the blurred background. I purposely didn’t show their feet. That would have anchored them to the ground.

“The idea came to me in the middle of the afternoon. I saw the painting in my head and was so excited by the idea that I went straight home to start working on it. It was like a memory; you don’t remember the exact details so you play with it in your brain until it’s the way you want it.”

Spirit Unbroken

“Spirit Unbroken” is not only the title of Bonnie Marris’ painting, but also defines the artist’s passion for her subject. “Believe it or not, I actually know this horse!” Bonnie says. “I’ve created this painting to be symbolic in many ways. Unleashing yourself and all your power; feeling the sheer thrill of pure freedom; giving it your all and outrunning adversity, defiance or dis-couragement is what everyone strives for. This has become an American theme today.” Combining this unbroken spirit with her mastery of the elements of color, composition, light and emotion in aligned perfection, results in pure wildlife pleasure. With “Spirit Unbroken,” Bonnie has created an image no horse lover should be without.

Jack’s Night to Win

“You never know when a spark which leads to a painting will first appear,” Bonnie Marris says. “I was at an event in California when I saw this amazing horse waiting under the lights on the sidelines. This spectacular horse had a mesmerizing look that I couldn’t take my eyes off, as if he had so much to say. As he swept the awards that night, I learned his name was Jack.

“There’s a kind of magic in making a connection with your subject one-on-one rather than as part of a pack or herd. As an artist, when I see this spark in any animal, I can’t wait to get back into the studio and capture it. The challenge and real reward is passing that connective spark to the collector.”

Mystere

Artist Bonnie Marris loves to explore the wilderness. Her first hand knowledge of the wildlife she loves brings an emotional involvement to her art, and, in turn, to the viewer. “To get into a natural environment and see the animals on their own terms is as important as knowing the animals themselves,” says Bonnie, who developed her talent by portraying animals “from the inside out.” Her passion for her subject is only eclipsed by her mastery of the elements of color, composition, light and emotion in aligned perfection.

“I’ve spent so much of my life working with, camping nearby and studying wolves that their every ‘essence’ has become a huge part of me,” Bonnie says. “Somehow, with every blank canvas, I have the push to paint the ‘ultimate’ wolf painting. Because wolves are so fascinating to me, I keep trying to get closer and closer to them in every way. They look past you, they look through you, they hold you. With ‘Mystere’, we’re as close as he’ll allow us.”

Out Foxed

Cunning, sly and wily, the fox is adept at deception. From time to time, however, the devious dodger can be bested by the trickery of another. “This red fox had been eyeing a heron in a large pond for quite a while,” says the artist. “The bird waded while the fox waited. When the bird moved into the tall weeds at the pond’s edge, the fox made his move. Instantly the huge wings unfolded and carried the heron out of the water, leaving only a feather and a fox’s empty embrace behind.”

The wild plains horses in “Thunder and Dust” are the quintessential example of what makes Bonnie Marris one of the finest wildlife artists working today. Combining passion for her subjects with mastery of color and composition, Marris’ paintings embody the drama and energy of pure wildlife pleasure.

Horses run for the joy of it and the love of their own speed with each horse racing to win. This shows speed as a glowing, powerful feeling, through bold color and bright light.

Queen Anne’s Lace

“Neither the mare nor I had ever experienced the thrill of being around a foal before,” says artist Bonnie Marris. Bonnie has raised horses for twenty-five years, but it wasn’t until last year that she experienced her first foal.

“This adventure in motherhood proved exciting to both of us and we ended up loving it so much! There’s a wonderful glowing softness in their nuzzling, a warmth and purity that comes only from learning to mother. The delicate, lacy flowers which give the painting its title add a gentle, caressing feeling to the composition.”

Sing Out

The distinctive howl of the wolf song is one of the most remarked upon, an almost hypnotic and magical quality of the animal. Hearing this sound is an experience few listeners ever forget. “My life long love affair with wolves is epitomized and celebrated with ‘Sing Out,'” says artist Bonnie Marris of her latest fine art limited edition. “Wolves have a very special way of sharing good things and bad things – they celebrate both. When puppies are born, the pack breaks into a glorious excited howl with tails wagging. When a pack member returns from an absence, a wonderful reunion howl is the welcoming. When a pack member is lost or dies, again the shared chorus begins. This painting is a celebration of the good and the bad of life. It celebrates bonds of friendship, love and loyalty. This original hangs over the fireplace in my home.”

Night Cap

The ideas of communal need and social structure are not unique to humans. Bonnie Marris captures that and more in “Night Cap.” Illuminated by the setting sun, friends gather bragging and talking as they quench their thirst at day’s end. And just like humans, every one has their place. The group leader, the one with the foal, is very proud yet protective. She has a best friend who is closest and whom she will always choose to care for the foal when she cannot. Slightly outside the inner circle stands the interloper or outcast, kept at bay by the glare of the mare. “I really hate the idea of impressing too greatly the habits of people upon the actions of animals,” says Bonnie. “But anyone who has spent time around such a coffee clatch will smile at just how similar the situation is.”

Night and Day

They say opposites attract and this pair of horses, one from each end of the color spectrum, inspired artist Bonnie Marris to create her latest artwork, “Night and Day.” “The duality of nature combined with the strength and speed infuses this symbolic and poetic piece with an energy all its own,” says Marris. “The spontaneity and excitement that comes from a horse is spectacular to watch. But it’s always a challenge to give a painting a sense of movement. These geldings have such a rhythm that against the blurred lighting of the background they appear to sail through the canvas. A blend of delicacy and masculinity, there’s both harmony and play between the two, their enthusiasm and energy the brilliance bounce off one another. While the light plays off the black and white, you still can see every color of the rainbow.”

The Terrible Twos

“I did all the right things! I picked a fabulous stallion with a great disposition to be her sire and I read all the books. In May, we delivered a beautiful little filly. I worked with her every day, teaching her leading, bathing, grooming, tying and not to kick or nip. She was the perfect foal . . . . Then, one morning, I woke up to the ‘terrible twos.’ Suddenly she argued! She threw tantrums! She bucked, she ran, she whinnied for me to leave, then not to leave. She threw her brushes, dumped her grain, splashed water on me, stomped her feet and shook her head. Was it my fault? Not enough teaching? Too much?

“She’s three now. Whew . . . she’s perfect again!”

Maxfield’s Garden

The first year of a foal’s life is essential to its development into a strong and healthy adult horse. For the first few months, the mare will devote her energy to protecting her foal from predators and the elements and from other curious horses in the herd. After three months or so the mare will assume the role of teacher for her foal. By carefully observing its mother’s behavior, the foal will gain a gentle introduction to finding food and water, recog-nizing danger and social dynamics within the herd. Like a human mother, the mare assesses her foal’s needs and provides for them with a tenderness that touches the heart.

Splash

With thundering hooves, flashing eyes and pounding hearts, Bonnie Marris’ horses represent all that is truly wild in great wildlife art. Their exhilaration is contagious and their spirit truly indomitable, as Marris’ skill with the brush and empathy with the animal soul brings their joyous freedom to life.

Each morning, as the sunlight rolls over the mountains, these three horses stretch their muscles and begin their travel across the countryside. Today’s leg of the journey begins with a refreshing splash through an ice-cold stream, fresh from the mountaintop. As the water leaps into the air around their knees, the exuberant animals will take different paths over the uneven bottom of the creek bed, but by sunset they will find one another again. By the time the last star has appeared in the evening sky the family will be safe at rest, gathering strength for the next day’s run.

Idle Hours

“Last September I spent seven days backpacking in Yellowstone, which has been a central inspiration for me as an artist,” said artist Bonnie Marris, “but this recent trip was a special gift. I saw so much wildlife and had the joy of camping near the Druid wolf pack for 3 days.” Both the male and female pass time bonding with their pups. There are many “Idle Hours” with no agenda other than tenderness and play. A wolf’s eyes seem to always have a remote distance, but this mother is in her own world, a place of incredible security, with her two pups. “This is the painting I always wanted to do,” Bonnie said. “I felt somehow completed when it was finished.”

Testing the Waters

Wildlife artist Bonnie Marris is exuberant about her favorite subjects: wolves, horses and bears but just about any wildlife subject portrayed with their young is the most exciting of all. Marris took what became, for her, an historic research trip to Yellowstone National Park because she was lucky enough to witness an unusual number of bear and their young. Stationed near one of the only fast-running rivers in the Park, Marris observed the mother bring her babies down to see water for the first time. A ferocious and dangerous mammal, this mother bear treated her cubs with gentle patience and care.

Crossing the Big Sandy

Texas longhorn cattle were almost extinct by the 1920s since modern day ranchers preferred a breed that could fatten up quickly and they no longer valued the longhorn’s ability to survive in high heat on little water, but lots of cactus, weeds and brush. Beginning in the 1930s, they were protected and bred in small stocks, mostly out of the idea of the romance of the Old West but later longhorns became popular for their lean, lower-cholesterol meat. Commercial ranchers now breed them with other cattle for their many strong traits including smarts and easy calving.

Artist Bonnie Marris had the opportunity to drive these cattle across the river. “They are so wild, as in undomesticated,” she said. “When you stand 20 feet away from one you feel like you are peering back into history, seeing what cattle were like before we got our hands on them.” They’re beautiful, intelligent and lean. Sounds like a breed apart.

News and Commentary

Ravens and wolves have an interdependency: the wolf makes the kill and the raven cleans up the remains. This raven, however, is simply relaying the lastest gossip and the wolf, lulled by the afternoon sun, is barely able to concentrate.

Pawnee

“Pawnee” is a portrait of the artist’s horse as a young’un. The American Paint Horse is a uniquely American breed, developed in the United States by a mix of wild mustangs and Quarter Horses. Trustworthy, agreeable, athletic and generally level-headed, they have a good cow sense and are well-suited to working farms. Everything about the portrait of this particular Paint says it’s unique. Each sinewy muscle is visible, with ears alert as the light shafts from above. She has some growing to do and she’s going to be even more beautiful. If you believe in reincarnation, you could do a lot worse than being a beloved horse of this artist in your next life.

Raven’s Path

“Personally, I’m most intrigued by the relationship with ravens,” says Bonnie Marris. “It is mysterious because it can only be imagined or supposed just what they are actually communicating with each other. It has only just begun to be formally studied. There’s an appearance of communication concerning the location of a kill that seems to happen again and again. The wolves will follow the ravens to a kill and although they badger each other back and forth over a kill, they seem to share.

“In this image, the ravens are leading a small group of wolves to a kill they have discovered. I love this painting because it is as much about the rela-tionship between the wolves and the crow as it is about the lighting and rhythm of the composition. The reflections on the water and the backlighting on the wolves worked out very well. It’s a cold, but very soothing piece.”

Morning Muses

Artist Bonnie Marris lives on a farm in Michigan with her husband, three horses and two dogs. Collectors of her work will recognize the coloring on this pair of friends, caught early one warm fall morning when Bonnie stepped outside to check on them. Her horses are her muses and she never tires of following the light moving across their backs throughout the day and the way the whites and shadows in their hair change colors.

“I love this painting because it is as much about the relationship between the horses as it is about the lighting at this time of day and the textures in the grass, alongside the ripples in the water. It’s a meditation, a very soothing piece.”

Hidden Secrets

“My paintings are private moments with the untamed, an intimate moment with the elusive side of the wilderness,” relates Bonnie Marris. “If connections between two people begin with the eyes, I think that when you are introducing people to wildlife, you should begin in the same way, with the eyes.

“There is a line in a song by Cheryl Wheeler. ‘. . . they hear voices older than time.’ It’s part of the aura around wolves. When you look into their eyes they seem to see so much farther and know so much more than we do. People have come up to me at shows and tell me that they’ve felt it was the first time they’ve connected with a wolf. I get so excited when I hear that.

“I think about our history with wolves and how much, throughout history, we feared them. It seems we are now attempting to understand them rather than fear them. Wolves are so secretive. It’s taken a long time to realize that they share many traits with us. If you think about how family oriented the pack is, it’s amazing. Family is family and we share that social nature.

“We are so busy and so rushed, a painting is a way to stop and spend a few moments discovering something new about the world in which we live. In the end, it gives us the chance to discover something new about ourselves as well.”

Lucky Catch

“The scene is my favorite wolf-viewing position near our campsite in Alaska,” said the artist. “I always think of this stream as “gold creek” because a legend still persists that gold was discovered here and a miner’s shack in the vicinity still survives to feed the myth! I watched as these two adults separated from the pack to hunt and fish and one of them did get lucky with a Dolly Varden trout.”

Heavy Drifting

The American Buffalo is a huge animal. As adults, the males are over five feet tall and can be up to nearly twelve feet in length. They can tip the scales at 2,000 pounds. There is a herd of nearly 3,500 of them in and around Yellowstone National Park. When the winter’s snow beings fall, they like to stick to ski trails and roads when the deep snow has made it almost impossible to move, but they are often forced to trudge their way through heavy drifts.

Lazy Days on the Big Crooked

“Monet had his garden in Givenchy, I have the Big Crooked,” reveals Bonnie Marris. “I almost feel guilty that I paint this spot so much, but every time I go it feels like I am seeing it for the first time. It’s a real creek near my cabin in northern Michigan. It’s one of those places where the light is wonderful, the sound is wonderful and the air is magic. You can just spend hours there letting the creek flow by.

“Every time I go, there is a new set of tracks from the most recent creatures to visit. Nearby, there is an active fox den. If you don’t see any when you come around, it’s a good bet that one of them just left. The creek is so crisp and clear that you can see deep into it, a great advantage for the foxes when the trout are running. I can imagine that they enjoy this place as much as I do, picking a spot to simply sit back and take it all in, just laying around listening to the Big Crooked roll.”

Bonnie Marris is recognized as one of the most important wildlife artists painting today. Her palette and style are distinctively her own, making a Marris painting identifiable from across the room.

Summer Fields

Collectors are drawn to Bonnie Marris’ paintings because the love she has for the animals she paints simply radiates from the canvas. This exhilaration is contagious as Marris’ skill with the brush and empathy for her subject brings to life the joyous freedom of the wild. One of the secrets to the success of her work is showing her subjects engaged in activities that we can easily relate to without imposing human interpretations upon the actions of animals.

With “Summer Fields” we have a perfect example of such a Marris work. Warm summer winds are blowing the leaves and grasses. The sun heats the colors and edges until they blend into one another. Horses’ tails swish and calmness blankets the field. They rest together, best buddies, massaging each other’s backs and listening to distant breezes.

Social Viewpoints

“Those of us who are social beings have many different ways of looking at things and many ways of communicating our opinions and feelings which is why I had so much fun creating this piece,” Bonnie Marris states. “You can read the viewpoints of each wolf and compare them to your own. I, myself, often feel my view of things is kind of askew from everyone else’s so I guess I’m the wolf in the middle. I don’t know if the ‘painting police’ allow the main subject to be upside down but that is just how this one just had to be!”

Tsunami

1,200 pounds of Ursus arctos horribilis churns an Alaskan river into a chilling eruption of spray and white foam. “It is a thrilling thing to watch a grizzly fishing ¯ something like watching a front-end loader in the water,” says Bonnie Marris, “but, when a bear senses an incursion on its fishing spot, the scene becomes electrifying! Command of a prime fishing location is paramount. A grizzly in control of one will protect it ferociously, while other bears are always seeking out a less-dominant bear they can remove.”

“Tsunami” is the quintessential image of North American brown bear, capturing the concentrated power of this great animal unleashed. One of the painting’s hallmarks: wherever you stand in a room, the grizzly always appears to be charging at you.

Morning Magic

There is something enchanting about the relationship between a mother and her foal. The foal is so fragile and dependent and the mother is so proud. Devoted to its mother, it will be a long while before this timid foal strays far from her mother’s protective side. Offered in a highly collectible edition of only 45, “Morning Magic” showcases Marris’ mastery of color, light and ability to convey the human-like emotions found in the natural world.

Escape by a Hare

A part of the diminutive fox’s appeal may be because it always appears to be smiling, but remember – that is akin to a wolf sending flowers. Marris knows that at the end of the day, we will always be on the side of the animal being chased. “All’s well that ends well,” as they say, and so it is as the title of this little cat and mouse implies, or better said, what this fox and rabbit “tail” relates.

Morning Run

What separates Bonnie Marris from other wildlife artists is not only her devoted treatment of her animal subjects but her meticulous attention to the scenery that frames them. The landscape acts as a muted but lovely secondary subject in Marris’ dynamic wildlife paintings. The horses in “Morning Run” are the embodiment of freedom, pounding forward, needing only to run.
The personality of each horse and their motion can be clearly seen: the strong second-in-command just behind the leader, jockeying for position; the skittish and focused chestnut and the haughty, almost balletic grays at the borders of the group. Considered individually, the horses are magnificent; but as Bonnie Marris paints them, as a herd in motion, they are breathtaking.

Fish Tales

“What you are most unprepared for when you see a grizzly in the wild the first time is the fact that it is so much bigger than you could ever have imagined,” beams Bonnie Marris. “Part of the thrill is that they are so unpredictable -they are friendly looking but dangerous, they look so soft and yet are so tough, they are so intelligent but so wild.

“Watching grizzlies fish is one of my favorite things. They are completely preoccupied with the fish and their skills are incredible. They track and corral the fish, even turn over rocks to see if the fish have gone under them. They are so intent on what they are doing they are not bothered by your presence. It is the ultimate artist’s meditation and they simply ignore everything else.

“I really do love ‘Fish Tales.’ I love that you can see what the bear is concentrating on so attentively. I really wanted to show the roughness of the fur and the cold hardness of the claws. There are so many different patterns in the water, those on the surface and those below it. It’s a very serene painting even though the grizzly is hunting. I like to believe you can hear him breathing.”

Eye to Eye

Throughout history the wolf has been viewed as a mysterious creature, a complex, intelligent, cunning, secretive and unpredictable animal of myth and legend. They roam hidden in the forests and howl at the moon for reasons we can only imagine. Bonnie Marris asks us whether they are the most dangerous predator of all or the last vestige of the wild in the wilderness.

The Power of Freedom

With flashing eyes and thundering hooves a newly-escaped mare, a rancher’s rope still hanging from her neck, joins a swift moving herd racing across an open valley. Mustangs are a mythic symbol of freedom, heroism, romance, limitless possibilities and the vanishing West where it was estimated that two million wild horses roamed the largely unfenced American West in the early 1900s. Some of those mustang herds descend directly from horses brought over by Spanish Conquistadors in the late fifteenth century. Other herds’ ancestors escaped or were let loose by settlers, ranchers or Native Americans.

Bonnie Marris’ The Power of Freedom captures the primal lure the open range has upon horses: it is a place to unleash their love of speed and run for the joy of it.

Mountain Mama

“Because mammals bond so closely with their offspring, the mother has a world-full of responsibility in feeding, teaching and raising their babies to be strong and alert,” says Marris. “The mother grizzly is no exception. She must keep an eye on her litter at all times. Each cub has its own personality, of course, like our own children.

Over a two to three year period she will teach her cubs to explore their big beautiful world. She is always there to encourage and protect them and, when necessary, to reprimand a cub with a solid huff or distinct growl for not paying close enough attention to her.”
