ARTIST: Heather Hawley

RESIDES: Alberta

BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION

STYLE

Heather works exclusively in oils in a realistic style. She is known for her careful attention to detail and accurate depiction of the subjects she paints. She usually paints on oil-primed linen panels or stretched canvas, and her paintings are of archival quality.

INSPIRATION

Heather lives on an acreage in Alberta, Canada and has spent a lot of time in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. She has always had a deep love for nature, animals, and the western landscape. That passion remains with her to this day and is often reflected in her art. Living on an acreage, she enjoys being surrounded by nature and has a wonderful, spacious studio which also provides a lot of inspiration for painting. It has a high, vaulted ceiling and an oversized screened garage door so she can enjoy the sensation of painting “almost outdoors” in the summer months!

“What draws me to a particular image is usually dramatic lighting or colour or, in the case of animals, a scene that shows the character or typical behaviour of an animal. I am also particularly drawn to scenes that show water reflections, regardless of subject matter. I find that images with one or more of these elements have the biggest emotional impact on me as the artist, and those are the ones I choose to paint. I will consider the painting a success if I have executed it to the best of my ability and the viewer ultimately has the same emotional reaction to the painting as I did when I first chose that particular image to paint!”

MEMBERSHIPS/COLLECTORS

Heather is an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) and is also a member of the Edmonton Chapter of the FCA. Her work is owned by collectors in Canada and internationally.

The Three Musketeers
by Heather Hawley
"I loved how these three little guys looked like they were just ready to go exploring and take on the world – undaunted by what might lay ahead of them. They really seemed to project an air of adventure! Before long, they would grow into big, beautiful swans (which, I am told, can be quite formidable!)"

Overwatch
by Heather Hawley
"I was captivated by the absolute intensity of this eagle's gaze – there seemed to be a real intelligence behind those piercing eyes that made me wonder what he was thinking about at the time! He projects an air of fierceness and confidence – and clearly is not one to be trifled with!"

Shearwater
by Mark Hobson
"Halfway between Prince Rupert and Vancouver is the coastal community of Bella Bella. Across the bay is the Shearwater marina and boat yard. I had a day waiting here for a boat ride and used the time to paint this little watercolour. My ‘studio’ was two up-ended 45 gallon fuel drums and the highlight of the day was the conversations and stories from the numerous fishermen that wandered by to watch me paint."

Red Hulled Fish Boat
by Mark Hobson
"The Salmon fleet for the west coast of Vancouver Island is reserved for trollers. These classic boats as depicted here are owned and operated by individual independent fishermen (and occasionally fisherwomen). Sadly with the reduced catches in recent years many of these beautiful boats are not being maintained. Their wooden hulls take a lot of time and expense to keep in shape and as a result are slowly disappearing. Their presence in the coastal harbours and inlets has always been an irresistible painting subject for me."
- Mark Hobson

Watercolour 10 × 10.5 in $1,067

ARTIST: John Horton

Born in England, at the age of 4 he was in a very serious road accident and spent a year in hospital but had an excellent recovery. His parents promoted art and music to protect him from further injury. But his love was the sea and so sailing was allowed. At 16 he joined the Royal Navy and served in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans. He studied art and apprenticed as a designer and architectural artist in the “Shopfitting” trade. He was very lucky to have Vic Barber as his mentor. Vic was a highly sought-after artist in the architectural field and encouraged John and helped him move up to an independent position – owning his own company. He immigrated to Vancouver Canada in 1966 where he set up his own business.

His paintings have been shown by the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Marine Artists and he is the only Canadian marine artist cited in Dennis Brook-Hart’s authoritative work Twentieth Century British Marine Painting.
