Excerpt by Robert Bateman from the artist’s new book:
“There are a lot of painters out there but only a tiny percent of those that I would call a true artist. Jan Martin McGuire is one of the few. She is truly an artist for two reasons. The obvious one is that she has the necessary skills and talents but the most important reason is that she paints that which is important in her life. Too much so-called art is a bunch of interior decorating. Jan’s work comes from her heart. A big piece of her heart belongs in Africa. I could say this about myself, having been there over a dozen times. But Jan’s work leaves me in awe. Many of her African paintings are truly stunning in their drama.”

ARTIST: John Mullane

RESIDES:  Bronx, NY

EDUCATION:  Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, NY, majoring in Illustration

As a youth, John Mullane intended to become a portrait artist, but instead pursued a career as a drummer. It was during this time that, by chance, he happened upon a book of Robert Bateman’s art. It inspired him and changed his life. In 1992, Mullane submitted what was his first serious attempt at painting wildlife, entitled Baby Jay, and incredibly, his painting was accepted into the prestigious Birds in Art exhibition at The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Displayed in the same exhibition were paintings by some of his artistic heroes, including Bateman and Carl Brenders.

Under the Pelham 6
by John Mullane
"Born and raised in the Bronx, mass transit is a daily part of many New Yorkers' lives. The often overlooked gritty weathered subways hold a quiet beauty that defines the city's character. The elevated tracks-their riveted steel and aging paint-inspired this painting. In Under the Pelham 6, a solitary pigeon adds life to this composition, a microcosm of endless visual possibilities. This painting was juried into the 2026 "Birds in Art Show" at the Leigh Yawkey Woodsen Art Museum Show, a very prestigious additional provenance for "Under the Pelham 6""

Playful Purpose - Chickadee
by Calvin Nicholls
"Showcasing paper as my medium often occupies my attention in the tooling and cutting of each component. Other times my intent is to allow the paper to become an essential element of the design and moment. Here, a chickadee has identified an unusual opportunity to pause and perch momentarily. Its alluring spontaneity sets it apart from many other backyard birds. Presenting a chickadee in an engaging gesture while celebrating an amazing art paper offered up a delightful opportunity at the art table for me.. The energy, positive and negative shapes proved irresistible. And the illusion of depth is enhanced by actually cutting the shadows of the artwork in varying colours of paper to provide an authentic visual effect in any lighting situation while on display."

ARTIST: Patricia Pepin

Born in 1964, Patricia Pépin spent her first years in Bromont. As a child she loved to roam in the woods and fields, observing the wilderness and drawing her many findings.

Pépin paints with oil colours and is interested in the traditions and techniques of her medium. While studying the works of old masters, she was attracted by the art of Vermeer and Vélasquez, struck by their mastery of light and colours.

Their influence is well represented in Patricia’s paintings, in which the realism born out of these notions can be clearly seen.

Add to this the love of nature, which Patricia Pépin paints and draws with a scrupulous fidelity, and you get a symbiosis of technique and knowledge that gives the paintings of Pépin very high credibility.

She has exhibited in “Birds in Arts” at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, WI, and at the Bennington Center for the Arts, VT. She is a Master Signature Members of the Society of Animal Artists (S.A.A.) and has illustrated two Quebec Wildlife Habitat Conservation stamps and two Wildlife Habitat Canada stamps.

Boulders
by Robert Ross
"The boulder dramatically sticks out from the calm water, which features a small amount of ripples as if there was a light breeze in the air. The rippled water and face of the stone catch the highlights of the sun beaming down on the coast and forest."

A Stick and Some Shade
by Sueellen Ross
"Loki is a stunning Golden Retriever with long, soft fur and big, mellow eyes. I wanted to show her bouncy, upbeat spirit by having her prance from full sun to a shady area. Her giant stick symbolizes her "can do," optimistic nature. Even the weeds are bright and optimistic."
