SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS:
Celebrity Portrait
The TLC “Counting On” Show aired tonight revealing my commission portrait of Jinger Vuolo and her beautiful little girl Felicity. What an exciting night! It all started back in September of 2019 when Jeremy Vuolo contacted me and asked if I would paint Jinger for a surprise birthday gift.

I felt very honored at Jeremy’s request and worked hard over many weeks with the help of Jesse Hsu (the photographer) to create the right pose; planning and sketching out the composition, then finally applying the paint to canvas to complete the story of Jinger and Felicity, a mamma’s love for her child.

A Stitch in Time

"In a time past where lamps were our only light and life was simple a young girl dreams of what might be. In the stillness of the night her hands are busy creating something warm for the season to come."

Spirit Island III
by Patrick Markle
"As an artist I find there are three subjects in nature that I am most drawn to. Water, mountains and trees. Over the years I have studied of each of these subjects on their own and also together. Spirit Island is one of those spots where the three come together in perfect balance to create a place of sublime beauty. I have painted this spot many times, but this version has a warm quiet atmosphere to it. The golden sky contrasted with the dark reflections of the lake make this one of my favorite renditions of this perfect landscape."

Golden Foothills
by Patrick Markle
"The Alberta foothills are one of my favorite subjects to paint. I love the big skies and rolling hills that catch the light perfectly revealing the old glacial river beds. The foothills are at their most dramatic on those windy days when the shadows and highlights are constantly shifting . Golden fields are illuminated as the clouds roll by leaving the rest of the plains in shadow. I wanted to play with the contrast of the golden sky and fields with the purple mountain forms in this painting. I think overall it really captures a hot afternoon in the foothills."

The Healing Swing
by Dean McLeod
"This painting is about adversity which is represented by the tree and the clouds. I've been calling the swing a healing swing, hence the title. Perhaps the influence is my autistic son who likes nothing better than a good swing. It seems to me the trick is not to let the adversity consume you."

ARTIST: John Mullane

RESIDES:  Bronx, NY

EDUCATION:  Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, NY, majoring in Illustration

As a youth, John Mullane intended to become a portrait artist, but instead pursued a career as a drummer. It was during this time that, by chance, he happened upon a book of Robert Bateman’s art. It inspired him and changed his life. In 1992, Mullane submitted what was his first serious attempt at painting wildlife, entitled Baby Jay, and incredibly, his painting was accepted into the prestigious Birds in Art exhibition at The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Displayed in the same exhibition were paintings by some of his artistic heroes, including Bateman and Carl Brenders.

Field Sparrow and Baccharis
by John Mullane
"While hiking and birding one Fall afternoon in a favorite location of mine the sun briefly lit up the salty marshlands. A single field sparrow was singing and the showy eastern baccharis was glowing in a magical way. This fleeting moment caught my attention and was the inspiration for my painting"

Spring Beginnings - Sunrise at Manning
by Michelle Murray
"A little lake off of Manning Drive just before the Henday at Sunrise March of 2021. The lake was still frozen and the last of the snow was melting close by. The cold north wind blew and it was still below freezing so early in the morning. The geese could be heard overhead and the sun rose bright over the horizon as a few wispy clouds reflected the rays. Just as it broke over the distant trees the ice and reeds lit up with the glow. What a beautiful morning!"

Last of Winter Greys
by Michelle Murray
"It was a Beautiful sunny day at Chickakoo lake recreation area close to Stony Plain, AB in February of 2021. The atmosphere was filled with the greys of winter. The sun broke through the clouds and glistened on the snow and last years grasses and twigs peaking out from the melting snow . Everything was just waiting to bloom again."

Against the Cold - Mourning Dove
by Calvin Nicholls
"Following its instincts a mourning dove puffed up against the cold last winter absorbing valuable warmth from a sun drenched perch in our old crab apple tree. A site I’d seen a thousand times and yet this time the patterns in the fanned plumage caught my eye. Realizing the fun it could provide at the art table I set to work. Paper choices made, patterns drawn and a new blade in place my focus was intent as I worked to capture the effect. Creating form, deep recesses and contrasting textures is essential in my low relief sculptures as I rely on display lighting to play across these surfaces casting shadows, popping highlights and enhancing the illusion of depth. Apparently our instincts guided both of us that day."

Artist’s Statement

I have always enjoyed being outdoors; for hikes in local conservation areas, from wilderness adventures such as mountaineering, or canoe tripping. One is reminded that we, as humans, are a part of nature; and can learn from studying the natural world. This is the central theme of my artwork.

An early interest in the work of landscape photographers led me to a realistic style of painting, in acrylics. However, the most important part of painting landscapes, for me, is the symbolism of the elements, and the association one can imagine from the depiction of the scenes. I always hope to suggest “going beyond” the landscape. It is the underlying spirit of nature that ties the landscape together with our human existence.
