Wrapped in His Love
by Catherine Marchand
"This Rembrandt-style figurative painting in oil was layered on copper acrylic primed board to show hints of copper throughout the painting. It’s moody and meant to convey a woman wrapped in cloth portraying a sense of the warmth of love."

A Good Book
by Catherine Marchand
"Everyone can relate to spending time with a good book; this young woman is lost in her imagination. I wanted to bring a lot of colour and life making this figurative painting realistic yet more creative using bolder colour and brush strokes hopefully making this more energetic than realistic."

Maligne Lake
by Patrick Markle
"This painting was inspired by my first trip to Maligne Lake. I was flipping through photos I had taken years ago when I came across this image. It brought back some great memories of hiking with friends as we were just getting to know our way around Jasper National Park. The mountains towering above the Lake and the juxtaposition of light and shadow struck me back then and continue to inspire me still."

High Alpine VII
by Patrick Markle
"This 12×12" acrylic painting is part of an exciting new series I've been working on. There is something magical that happens when these loose geometric backgrounds are juxtaposed against tight clean organic design. I love the explosion of colour that happens as the ink backgrounds take shape. All design aspects aside this painting is for all the winter lovers out there. Whether you've been skiing or boarding in the mountains, snowshoeing on the prairies or snowmobiling out east, no doubt you've come across some snow-laden trees. Snowghosts as we call them in the mountains are one of those symbols of winter and always make me think of fun times had, playing in the snow."

Excerpt by Robert Bateman from the artist’s new book:
“There are a lot of painters out there but only a tiny percent of those that I would call a true artist. Jan Martin McGuire is one of the few. She is truly an artist for two reasons. The obvious one is that she has the necessary skills and talents but the most important reason is that she paints that which is important in her life. Too much so-called art is a bunch of interior decorating. Jan’s work comes from her heart. A big piece of her heart belongs in Africa. I could say this about myself, having been there over a dozen times. But Jan’s work leaves me in awe. Many of her African paintings are truly stunning in their drama.”

ARTIST: John Mullane

RESIDES:  Bronx, NY

EDUCATION:  Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, NY, majoring in Illustration

As a youth, John Mullane intended to become a portrait artist, but instead pursued a career as a drummer. It was during this time that, by chance, he happened upon a book of Robert Bateman’s art. It inspired him and changed his life. In 1992, Mullane submitted what was his first serious attempt at painting wildlife, entitled Baby Jay, and incredibly, his painting was accepted into the prestigious Birds in Art exhibition at The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Displayed in the same exhibition were paintings by some of his artistic heroes, including Bateman and Carl Brenders.

Tremolo Eastern Screech Owl
by Calvin Nicholls
"Showcasing paper as my medium often occupies my attention primarily in the creation of the main subject. Other times I intend to allow the paper to become an essential element of the design and presentation. The simplicity of form in the subject, the delicate details of the feathers and the negative space around the bird direct me as I decide how to combine these interests. Given that screech owls rely on specifically designed nest boxes and suitable tree cavities, I chose to create an opening with a bevelled edge through which the bird seems ready to enter. This provides an interesting repetition of circular forms that resemble the “facial ruff” and cat-like eyes. Characteristic markings along the back have been accentuated by flipping the feather tips upward to catch more than their usual share of light."
