Sun and Clouds, Jasper
by Patrick Markle
"This painting was inspired by a warm summer day in Jasper. My wife and I were enjoying a casual day in Jasper and found ourselves soaking in the sun along the banks of the Athabasca river. As per usual I had my camera with me and managed to get some shots to capture the moment."

Foothills

ARTIST: John Mullane

RESIDES:  Bronx, NY

EDUCATION:  Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, NY, majoring in Illustration

As a youth, John Mullane intended to become a portrait artist, but instead pursued a career as a drummer. It was during this time that, by chance, he happened upon a book of Robert Bateman’s art. It inspired him and changed his life. In 1992, Mullane submitted what was his first serious attempt at painting wildlife, entitled Baby Jay, and incredibly, his painting was accepted into the prestigious Birds in Art exhibition at The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Displayed in the same exhibition were paintings by some of his artistic heroes, including Bateman and Carl Brenders.

Common Yellowthroat and Wisteria
by John Mullane
"I was heading home from an uneventful day of hiking and birding last Spring when I noticed some movement in a nearby Wisteria tree. Darting in and out of the tangled vines were a pair of Yellowthroats hunting insects.I chose to depict the male also known as the yellow bandit. I loved the combination of the rich purple/violet flower clusters and the striking little male warbler."

Staccato
by Calvin Nicholls
"Male and female downies visit our suet feeders regularly offering contrast to the juncos, goldfinches and chickadees. The tail feather brace and dynamic markings on the folded wings give it prominence amidst the flurry of activity in the tangle of branches of our old apple tree. I'm enjoying the strength and subtle qualities of hand made mulberry fibre papers created by artisans who to this day ply their trade steeped in ancient traditions. The refined texture and sheen of the background sheet adds a new elegance in my presentation as I explore methods of celebrating paper as a medium and fine art form."

Common Grackle
by Elizabeth Nicholls
"I saw this grackle while visiting my parents at my childhood home in Lindsay, Ontario. The common grackle is one of several birds that regularly visits the property. I've always admired the luster of their feathers, and was eager to capture that in this drawing. In some areas, the common grackle is now considered a pest by farmers because of its large numbers and fondness of grain. Despite this, I hold this bird near and dear to my heart because it reminds me of home, and I can't help but admire its beauty."

Tranquility
by Elizabeth Nicholls
"I noticed this gull on the beach at Sunny Side Park in Toronto on a July afternoon. The ring-billed gull is a familiar bird, common in both rural and urban areas, always on the hunt for scraps in farm fields or city parking lots. I was drawn to the calm peacefulness of this particular bird, in contrast to a gull's usual boisterous nature. Just as people do on a hot summer day, the gull escaped from the noise and chaos of the city, opting for the refreshing quiet of the Lake Ontario shore. This piece was jurried into the 2016 Birds in Art show at the Leigh-Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, as well as the 2019 Society of Animal Artists Annual Exhibition at the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas."
